STEF & FERDI

The story of Stef & Ferdi starts in New York City, which is where they first met. It was Paris however, forever the city of love, that they fell madly in love. After having lived abroad for over twelve years, they now live in The Netherlands, where they started their own family.

What do you do?
Stef: I work as a model, which is quite an irregular job. And I am the fulltime mom of Fos, who is one and a half years old now.
Ferdi: I am a stylist, art director, father and fiancée.

How and where did you meet each other?
Stef: I met Ferdi through a mutual friend in New York. We were going to see a performance of a band, that Ferdi was part of.
Ferdi: We met in New York, … but we fell in love in Paris.

At what moment did you know you were in love?
Stef: I had a crush on him after I first met him in New York. Three years later we saw each other again in Paris, which is when we started dating.

‘Our special place is definitely Paris, as this is the place we first met and fell madly in love’

Do you have a special place, or a place you call a “second home” where the two of you like to hang out and retreat to?
Stef: We lived together in Williamsburg, New York, for quite a long time. I actually would love to go back there some time, now being with the three of us.
Ferdi: Definitely Paris, as this is the place we met and fell madly in love.

How would you describe each other in four words?
Stef: Honest, funny, stubborn and funky.
Ferdi: Loving, outspoken, quirky and modern.

Do you have pet names for each other? If so, we’d love to know them.
Ferdi: She often calls me fat-face, but I don’t know if that really is a pet name…

What is the most annoying thing about your boy- or girlfriend?
Ferdi: We are both quite outspoken, so that clashes sometimes.

What is your craziest, most hilarious memory of you as a couple?
Stef: The first summer we dated, we stayed at his parents’ house in Nieuwegein. One night we were both drunk and decided to go home. So we stepped on a bike, with Ferdi biking and me on the back, and went down this bridge, when all of a sudden there was a pole in the middle of the road… according to Ferdi, it wasn’t there before. This resulted in us getting launched off the bike. We landed in the bushes with twigs in our hair and bruises all over. It wasn’t that funny right then, believe me, but if we talk about this incident now it always makes us laugh.

Which element (fire, earth, air, water) fits your partner the best and why?
Stef: Water, as he is really fluid; he easily adjusts to situations. His zodiac sign is also fish and he loves swimming.
Ferdi: It depends on her mood, but I would say fire or air; Stef can be quite feisty but she can also be really calm and compliant.

Which character trait of the other are you jealous of?
Stef: His self-confidence. He also always seems to know what he is doing.
Ferdi: She is really organised and caring, which I really admire.

When was the last time you cried?
Ferdi: After our son was born.

What would you do if you won the lottery tomorrow?
Stef: I would love to have another baby and live together with our family on a farm.

Has your relationship changed you as people? In other words, do you think your partner has an effect on you?
Stef: Thanks to him I am a lot less insecure. Of course it’s part of growing older, but it is also because Ferdi doesn’t take any (of my) bullsh*t. Way back, I would overreact but now I feel like I learned to let that go more often.
Ferdi: Yes, it has changed me! We lived abroad for more then twelve years, I became a father and we bought a house. Also, I am starting with a whole new carrier, so a lot has changed for me actually, in a positive way.

What is your definition of love?
Stef: Being with someone who you can truly be yourself and feel safe with. And being there for each other on the good and the bad days.

‘Every day I am amazed by what a loving and wonderful mother she is for our son.’

If you could go back in time and take your partner on a first date again, what would you do differently?
Ferdi: We would have dinner in Paris and share one or two bottles of wine. Afterwards we would go dancing somewhere, either with our friends or just the two of us.

When was the last time you were extremely proud of your partner?
Stef: Ferdi is working on a new carrier, which is more focused on styling and art direction. Together with a photographer and friend of his, he made this extremely cool book, which effectively got him an appointment with the head designer of Dior. Aside from that, I recently watched an episode of Gossip Girl, when I suddenly heard a song from his old band. So proud.
Ferdi: I am always so incredibly proud of my girl. She chose to become a mother at a young age. Every day I am amazed by what a loving and wonderful mother she is to our son.

Do you have a favourite song together? If so, what is it?
Stef: “Baby” by Donnie & Joe Emerson. Ferdi is not really a romantic-dancer type of guy, but I convinced him of this song and he finally danced with me in a cocktail bar in New York’s East Village.
