SOPHIE & WILLEM
‘It’s like floating through the infinite depths of space, but holding each other’s hands whilst doing so, making it less scary’. Listening to a young couple describing the love they have for each other in this utmost romantic way, makes you want to go back in time; back to that very moment when you first fell head over heels for “the one”. It’s hard not be jealous of this seemingly perfect romance of young love birds, Willem and Sophie.
Where does your love story start?
Sophie: ‘Classic - in the supermarket. I’m a small person and the hummus was on the top of the shelf, way out of reach, so I used this shortcoming as an excuse to talk to the very handsome stranger I’d spotted. Fast forward a year and we live together and have two goldfish, Kim and Kanye.’
So, was it the classic “love at first sight”?
Willem: ‘Yes definitely, at the end of our first date we knew we were in love. We were standing on a bridge, drunkenly hugged good night and cycled off into opposite directions. We spoke about it a few weeks later and both admitted that on bike rides home, we both realised we were going to be significant in each others lives.’

Everything seems almost too perfect; do you have any embarrassing pet names for each other perhaps?
Sophie: ‘We don’t know why but we call each other Boogie, Shpoogie and we have no idea why. It just came up. Every now and then it develops into something like Sphoogini or Shpoogliatelle.’
What is your craziest, most hilarious moment of you as a couple?
Sophie: ‘We were once on a night bus in London and this crazy homeless guy got on and started talking to us in this Jamaican accent. As he was getting off for his stop he declared to us (and the whole bus) ‘you’re beautiful, he’s handsome – it’s a match made in heaven’. You really need to imagine him saying this with a Jamaican accent to understand how epic it was.’
So now you live together with Kim and Kanye, where do you see yourself in ten years?
Willem: ‘Married, with a couple of baby Willphies and a really fluffy cat; having some beers in our amazing house in the centre of Amsterdam, after the kids have gone to sleep… still laughing about the Jamaican guy on the bus.’
